My wife and I have been customers for more than three years. We have been happy with the doctors, examinations, and our prescriptions for both glasses and contact lenses. I have vision insurance and my wife does not. Unfortunately our recent experience will be our last. The eye wear department staff that we dealt with were dishonest, deceptive, and greedy. One can draw the conclusion that maximum profit and commission comes before all else and it is evident as both individuals did not make eye contact when presenting us with the inflated totals. The lady at the main desk tried to overcharge for the Dailee contact lenses by more than $200.00. When confronted, this same person blamed Dr. Vick for coding the year supply incorrectly at 30 day times 12 verses 90 day times 4 in the computer. I recognized this lady as the same person from two years prior and undoubtedly has the experience to know what a normal year supply should cost (we were already advised by Dr. Vick what a year supply will cost). It is my belief she was testing to see if I was either unaware or willing to pay the higher price. The eye wear specialist, Cynthia, was equally experienced and unscrupulous. She was not very personable and spent more time staring at her computer screen and calculating than she did explaining which was done minimally and only when prompted. It was a day later that I realized I was charged $29.99 for an optional eye wear warranty that was never discussed, requested, or agreed (had it been offered I would have declined). My wife was charged $99.00 for an eye exam when the bill showed $89.00 as being "Usual And Customary" identified by the cryptic letters "U & C". I checked the Ray Ban website the following day and identified my exact frames by type and model number and found that I overpaid by $30.00 over retail. The invoice was very difficult to read and did not break down exactly what insurance paid vs. out of pocket. I returned the next day and showed the store manager, Terri, an invoice from two years prior that was clear and easy to understand. After some discussion, Terri agreed to refund $73.00 but only after stating that I should have researched what frames should cost before I actually purchase them. Really? Terri proceeded to tell me that since they are now corporate owned she no longer has the authority to change the prices of frames or process a refund but will handle it through "corporate" and ask that they expedite a check to my address. I waited patiently for twenty something days for the check that never arrived and after two phone calls finally have a credit card refund after waiting nearly the entire month of February. Keep in mind I was initially told that they could not do a credit card refund despite having paid in full with the same credit card! This Eye Care Center location (Smithfield) has very good doctors. It is unfortunate that a few key people responsible for the rest of the business have lost my complete confidence and trust. The experience and expertise of the doctor(s) do not make up for the lack of integrity by at least two experienced, tenured staff members that apparently report to the store manager. My wife and I both deserve to be treated with fairness and honesty. As a returning local customer one would expect to have some appreciation and a sense that they may help you find ways to save money. Not. Nothing genuine or sincere. Nothing friendly or remotely caring. And it was not a busy office at all. I chose my frames without any help. In fact I walked the frames for about fifteen minutes with no offer of help. Despite this observation and against my instincts the sale was as easy as it gets and only because I needed to get back to work. We fully expect a business to make money and prefer to spend money locally when possible. We will not accept being taken advantage of and thus will find another optometrist and reputable place to purchase glasses and contact lenses even if it means going out of town.
